Dino Crisis 2 is een survival horrorspel waarin je de personages Dylan en Regina bestuurt (die op verschillende punten in de verhaallijn van de een naar de ander overschakelen). Je verzamelt items en gebruikt ze om puzzels op te lossen terwijl je vecht tegen de hordes dinosaurussen die het eiland bewonen. Net als Alone in the Dark gebruikt de game 3D-modellen voor personages, vijanden en items en statische 2D-achtergronden voor hun omgeving.
In eerste instantie begint elk personage met een pistool en een slagwapen, maar later in het spel kunnen meer wapens, zoals vlammenwerpers of raketwerpers, worden gekocht. De aanvallen van de dinosauriërs zorgen ervoor dat je 'vitaliteit' verliest, die kan worden hersteld met genezende items. Soms zal een aanval ervoor zorgen dat u bloedt en daardoor langzaam uw gezondheid verliest; specifieke gezondheidsitems stoppen het bloeden.
Voor elke gedode dinosaurus ontvang je 'uitstervingspunten'. Door een paar dino's snel achter elkaar te doden, activeer je een 'combo' en krijg je dus meer punten.
